Arowanas

Arowanas are ancient fish that originated in freshwater rivers across South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Known for their striking appearance and elongated bodies, they are often called “dragon fish” in some cultures, symbolizing luck and prosperity.

There are several Arowana varieties, each with its distinct characteristics. The Asian Arowana comes in colors like red and gold, while the Silver Arowana, native to South America, is known for its sleek silver scales and large size. Black Arowanas are similar to Silver but have darker coloring. All Arowanas share the same long body shape and the habit of jumping out of the water to catch prey.

Before adopting an Arowana, consider their need for large tanks, as they can grow over three feet in length. They also require strong filtration and excellent water quality to thrive. Challenges include their aggressive nature, especially toward other fish, and their tendency to jump, which means tank covers are necessary. Arowanas are also expensive and need a high-protein diet.
