Corydoras catfish, commonly called Cory catfish, originate from freshwater streams and rivers across South America. These peaceful bottom dwellers are known for their shoaling behavior and ability to thrive in groups. Over 170 species of Corydoras exist, offering a variety of colors and patterns.
Popular varieties include the Bronze Cory (Corydoras aeneus), which is hardy and easy to care for, and the Panda Cory (Corydoras panda), known for its striking black-and-white markings. While some species are small and delicate, like the Pygmy Cory (Corydoras pygmaeus), others are larger and more robust, like the Peppered Cory (Corydoras paleatus). Despite differences in size and appearance, all Corydoras share similar care requirements, such as soft substrate and clean, well-oxygenated water.
Before adopting Cory catfish, consider their social needs and sensitive barbels, which require smooth tank surfaces. Challenges include keeping the tank clean, maintaining proper water quality, and ensuring a peaceful community environment.
